Lanikai's turquoise water. The Mokulua Islands at sunrise. Bellows at golden hour. Kailua is where Hawaii looks like a dream.
Kailua is where photographers go when they want Hawaii at its most breathtaking. The windward side of Oahu gets more consistent morning light, calmer winds, and the kind of water color — a luminous turquoise-to-navy gradient — that feels almost unreal in photos. Lanikai Beach consistently ranks among the most beautiful beaches on Earth, and the twin Mokulua Islands rising from the water create a backdrop that needs no filter and no editing.
Why the light works here: Kailua's east-facing beaches catch the best morning light on the island. Sunrise sessions here are legendary — soft pink and gold tones reflecting off the water while the Mokulua Islands glow in the background. For afternoon and evening sessions, Kailua Beach Park and Bellows offer gorgeous diffused light without the harsh midday contrast of west-facing spots.
We've scouted every corner of Kailua to find the angles and moments that make your photos unforgettable. Here are the locations we return to again and again.
Consistently rated one of the world's best beaches. Calm water, powdery sand, and the Mokulua Islands as a backdrop — perfect for weddings and couples sessions.
A wide, accessible beach with clear water and gorgeous light. Great for families, engagements, and groups of all sizes.
A more secluded stretch with dramatic wave action and lush treeline framing — striking for editorial and adventure-style sessions.
A short hike to two WWII bunkers with panoramic views of Lanikai, the Mokulua Islands, and the windward coast. Sunrise here is extraordinary.
Oahu's largest wetland, framed by the Ko'olau mountains. Moody, lush, and completely different from the beach — great for editorial couples work.
Charming local cafes, painted storefronts, and relaxed streets make Kailua town a natural, lifestyle-forward backdrop.
All sessions include professional editing, an online gallery, and full print rights. No travel fees — ever.

Yes — Kailua is fully included in our standard Oahu coverage. No travel fee, no mileage charge, no surprise costs.
Sunrise — without question. Lanikai faces east, so the morning light hits directly and the Mokulua Islands are perfectly lit from the front. We recommend arriving 30 minutes before sunrise.
Absolutely. We do a lot of pillbox sunrise sessions — it's about a 20-minute hike and the reward is one of the best panoramic views on Oahu. We factor the hike time into your session schedule.
Kailua Beach Park can get busy on weekends after 9am. For family and couple sessions, we schedule early (7–9am) to get the best light and the most space. By midday it fills up, but Lanikai and Bellows stay quieter.
We shoot across the entire island — no location is too far and no travel fee is ever added.
