Oahu Maternity Photography: What to Know Before Your Session

A maternity session is a chance to slow down and mark a once-in-a-lifetime chapter — and Oahu gives you some of the most beautiful backdrops in the world to do it. Here is what to know before your session: when to book, what to wear, and where on the island the light and scenery work best.

The best time in your pregnancy for photos

Most maternity sessions happen between about 28 and 34 weeks. By then your bump is beautifully round but you are usually still comfortable enough to move, walk a short distance on sand, and enjoy the shoot. If you are expecting multiples or have been advised to take it easy, a little earlier is perfectly fine.

When to book

Reach out a few weeks ahead so we can hold a date in that ideal window and keep an eye on the weather. Booking early also gives us time to plan wardrobe and location, and to build in a backup date if the forecast turns — something worth doing for any outdoor session in Hawaii.

What to wear for a maternity shoot

Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully and move with the island breeze. Solid colors and soft, earthy tones tend to complement Oahu’s blues and greens better than busy patterns. Fitted pieces that gently show the bump usually read better on camera than loose, boxy shapes. Bring a second outfit if you would like variety, and do not forget your partner — coordinating rather than exactly matching looks best.

The best Oahu locations for maternity photos

Every mama-to-be has a different vision, so we tailor the spot to you:

Bringing your partner and kids

Maternity sessions are a wonderful time to include your partner and any older siblings. We usually start with a few family frames while everyone is fresh, then transition to solo portraits of you and your bump once the little ones have had their moment.

Timing around golden hour

As with all of our outdoor work on Oahu, the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give the softest, most flattering light. Sunrise sessions are cooler and quieter; sunset sessions are warm and glowing. We will recommend whichever suits your location and comfort best.

How to book your session
