How We Shoot Golden Hour Weddings in Hawaii

Golden hour in Hawaii doesn't last long. On Oahu, the window between soft warm light and full darkness can be as short as 12–15 minutes. Our entire pre-ceremony workflow is built around making the most of every second.

Why Golden Hour Is Different in Hawaii

Unlike the mainland, where golden hour can stretch across the horizon for 30–45 minutes, Hawaii's latitude means the sun drops quickly. The good news? When it's good, it's extraordinary. The ocean acts as a reflector, bouncing warm amber tones back into shadow areas in a way that's almost impossible to replicate in a studio.

We've shot golden hour sessions at Lanikai Beach, Sunset Beach, Ko Olina Lagoons, and in the foothills of the Ko'olau range — and each location behaves differently depending on cloud cover, season, and the direction of the light.

How We Plan the Timeline

Every wedding we photograph starts with a sunset time check. We use the NOAA solar calculator to find the precise sunset time for that date at that GPS coordinate. From there, we work backwards:

Our Gear Setup for Golden Hour

We typically shoot with a 70–200mm f/2.8 from 30–40 feet back to compress the background and make the colors pop. For close portraits, we switch to a 50mm f/1.4 to let the bokeh carry the emotion. A reflector in the hands of our second shooter fills harsh shadows during the transition period when the sun is still bright.

One tip most photographers don't share: we slightly underexpose at golden hour — about ⅓ to ½ stop. It makes skin tones richer, colors more saturated, and gives us more latitude in editing to lift shadows without blowing the highlights.

The Best Oahu Locations for Golden Hour Weddings

After years of shooting weddings across Oahu, these are our favorite spots for golden hour portraits:

What We Tell Our Couples

We always brief our couples before the session: don't worry about posing. Golden hour is about movement, connection, and letting the light do the work. We'll direct you into position and then tell you to just be with each other — walk, whisper, laugh. The best golden hour images are never stiff or posed. They're stolen moments wrapped in extraordinary light.

Book your Oahu wedding with us and we'll build your entire timeline around the light. It's the most important vendor decision you'll make that nobody talks about.
