Family Photos on Your Oahu Vacation: A Local Guide

There's a particular kind of magic in Hawaii light — and the easiest way to take it home with you is a family photo session while you're on island. Every summer we photograph families who flew into Honolulu for vacation and wanted more than phone snapshots to remember the trip. Here's exactly how to plan one.

Why Book a Family Session on Vacation

A vacation is one of the rare times the whole family is together, relaxed, and dressed for the occasion — no school runs, no work calls, just everyone in the same place at the same time. That's the dream scenario for a family photographer. You're already in one of the most photogenic places on earth, so instead of fighting for a parking spot at a mall studio back home, you get the Pacific, the Ko'olau mountains, and that warm island glow as your backdrop.

Most of our vacation families tell us the same thing afterward: the photos became the thing they were most glad they did. Souvenirs end up in a drawer. A gallery of everyone laughing on Lanikai Beach ends up on the wall.

The Best Spots for Family Photos on Oahu

After years of shooting across the island, these are the locations we recommend most often for families:

The Best Time of Day (Especially With Kids)

We almost always recommend sunrise or the last hour before sunset. The light is soft and flattering, the heat is gentler, and the beaches are far less crowded.

If you're traveling with young children, sunrise is your secret weapon. Kids are well-rested, the beaches are nearly empty, and you'll be done before the midday heat and tour buses arrive. Yes, it means an early alarm — but a 6:30am session on an empty Lanikai Beach is worth it, and your jet-lagged kids are probably awake anyway.

If sunrise isn't realistic, the hour before sunset (golden hour) is the next best window. Just know the popular beaches are busier then, so we'll position you to keep crowds out of frame.

What to Wear

Keep it simple: coordinate, don't match. Soft neutrals, linens, and light earth tones photograph beautifully against Hawaii's blues and greens, and they won't fight the scenery. Avoid large logos and neon. We've written a full guide on this — see What to Wear for Your Family Portraits in Hawaii for outfit combinations that work.

What to Expect on the Day

A typical family session runs about an hour and comfortably covers everyone — couples, kids, grandparents, even extended family groups visiting together. We keep it relaxed and movement-based rather than stiff and posed, especially with children: we'll get the classic "everyone looking" shot, then let the kids run, splash, and play so we capture the real connection in between.

Our family sessions start at $350 and include professionally edited high-resolution images delivered in an online gallery you can download and print from anywhere. Most families have their photos in hand well before they fly home.

How to Book Before Your Trip

The single most important tip: book before you arrive. Our calendar fills quickly in summer and over the holidays, and the best sunrise and sunset slots go first. Reach out with your travel dates as soon as you have them and we'll lock in a time and location, check the tide and sunset charts, and send you a simple prep guide. There are no travel fees anywhere on Oahu, so wherever you're staying, we'll come to you.
